Live feeding and Live feeding photos/movies...?

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 9, 2008, 7:49 PM
I know some people will dissagree..you are free to do so. This is my opinion.

Okay so I feed f/t. ONLY f/t. There are so many reasons against it...here is a short version of the reasons I find most important.

1. The snake can be hurt! Sure pinkie mice are pretty safe, but mice and rats can bite back! Left uneaten overnight, a mouse or rat can kill a snake with ease. Even eaten right away a bite can make a snake lose an eye or get a chunk taken out. Rabbits in particular are super dangerous. Not only can they bite with powerful sharp teeth, but they can kick and kill a snake with a single kick to the head. So is it worth loosing a snake? no.

2. Never start feeding live. Sure pinkies are safe, but get a snake hooked on live feeding then they will want them live more and more.

3. "but it's more natural" Bullshit. Sure snakes would eat live in the wild, but they would also be wild! They would not live in a fishtank or rack...they would not have perfect temps and food every 7 days. They would not be calm and good pets.

4. It's more expensive! A frozen mouse is like a buck or 1.25 tops. A live one...2.50.

5. I am an animal lover. There is No thrill in watching it die before my eyes. If that thrills you then you are too immature for a pet snake or any pet really. Go grow up or watch Discovery.

Now saying that...if you are feeding live and want help switching, just note me! I have switched snakes over several times...including my albino ball python who was the most subborn she could be about eating! Most snakes will take f/t without any worry. The "it will only eat live" is a myth. They will all eat frozen if you work with them and use the tricks of the trade!

***************************************

So here is my big rant. Most Photos/movies of live feeding is NOT art. Those are snapshots. If you feel you can really capture the beauty of a live feeding then make it a real art photo not a shockvalue snap. Use lighting, composition, focus and skill to give the world a "National Geographic" photo, anything less is not worthy of posting on a art site...save it for your personal collection or scraps.

Well anyway...enough of my rant for the day!
